Description
In the first few years the colonists ignored the gigantic poppy like plants that grow in sparsely wooded forests everywhere in the mild climate zone of the planet. By monitoring them a little closer, at least, they found that all of the flying or hovering creatures which inhabit this world consume the nectar these plants produce. The Dragon Bats, the nautilus-like Nemo's Submarines, the Octoblimps, the Pumpkinbirds ... maybe even the Dancers that have been encountered only recently ... visit the plants and feed there. Or not feed, as the watchers soon discovered, for the species in question actually lived on other food. It looked more like they were fuelling up. Chemical analysis showed that the nectar posessed qualities that enhanced the inherent power of everything that came in touch with it. The Dragon Bats' and the Pumpkinbirds wing muscles, the Nemo's Submarines' mysterious floating abilities ... they got powered up to maximum by the nectar.
A few years' later the scientists of the colony found a way to alter the nectar so that it's qualitities could even be transmitted to machinery. Since that day on the explorer's airship fleet visits the forests of the now christened Fuel Flowers on a rotating basis so as not to consume too much of the nectar and create a shortage for the planet's wildlife and fuel up there.
Steampunk airships rendered by my good friend and 3D artist, Adrian Alanis (https://www.artstation.com/adrian3dart).
